Helping to Foster Environmental Literacy for All California Students

We rely on the environment for everything we need – the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and much, much more.  As the context in which we live our lives, the environment provides students an intrinsically engaging and authentic context for learning.

The California Education and the Environment Initiative is a statewide effort to make environmental literacy an integral part of K-12 instruction in California.  We provide educators with professional learning and instructional materials that demonstrate how to blend the environment into the teaching of traditional academic subjects like science, history, and English language arts.

Environmentally literate students are able to examine real-world issues, think critically about the relationship between humans and natural systems, and make informed decisions, while at the same time building problem solving and collaboration skills that will prepare them for academic and career success. Let’s work together to provide all California students access to high-quality instruction that supports environmental literacy and ensures a bright future for California and our planet.
